Rambling along

Monday, August 31st, 2009

The race on Sunday went awesome.  Before the race I didn’t know what to expect.  I have been logging a lot of miles in preparation for this race.  I get there a little later than I wanted to and was forced to park a long way away.  I get everything ready and I roll up to the building to bull shit with some people.  After a little harassing it was time to roll to the back of the start chute.

As soon as Hauser said go it was off.  I had a crappy start up the hill and managed to put myself about mid pack before the first turn.  I managed to get some people behind me before the turn for the long straight to the single track.  Right before the bridge I seen out of the corner of my eye a guy go down really hard because he left the trail and hit a hole.  So I continue on my way and managed to be 4th to the single track behind Tyler, Jeff and Warren.  I managed to hang on to Tyler and Jeff for a little bit and then they got traffic between us and then it was a game trying to catch back on.  I managed to go to hard on the first lap and had to recover for a little bit on the second lap.    Right on the maple loop I managed to get passed by Steele and Troy, and I had recovered enough then to put some power down to try and hang with them.  I managed to pull away from Troy without a problem and then I got onto Steele’s wheel through the single track.  After a section of single track I managed to get ahead of Steele and tried to keep the power down to stay ahead.  I wanted to stay ahead of the hard charging elites but that didn’t work for me today.  Right after the long double track finish we turn right to head into the “1.5″ track to the finish.  Matter and Jesse LaLonde managed to pass me.  I tried to see if I could hang with them just to see how fast they were going, to fast for me.  Well we get to the little hill about 1 mile from the finish and I look back and see Steele, I thought I had a bigger gap than that.  So I managed to accelerate away from the hill fast enough to keep him behind.  I caught and passed two more people in the chute and kept Steele behind.  I beat him by 8 seconds, it is finally nice to be able to race with someone instead of being by myself for the race.

I got second which I didn’t expect because of my lack of training recently.  Next up is Lake Geneva, I always have done well there considering the amount of climbing that we have to do.

New Cannondale stuff

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

After looking through the different bike companies I noticed that Cannondale has their 2010 stuff out.  I am very fond of the Scalpel and the Flash 29er.  I have always liked Cannondale except for the price difference between them and the other companies.  I have come to the conclusion you get what you pay for.  The Grand Failure has failed on me too many times and it is time to get a new bike.  I am also looking at the Epic 29er but like I said Cannondale has always treated me well in the past.

My 1999 F900 lasted 7 years and all I had to do was normal maintenance and get a new rear wheel when the axel broke.  That is why it is tempting to get a Cannondale because I know of the longevity of the bikes.

The ride tonight was awesome, I have lost some of the top end because of the shift in my training.  I am trying to log a lot of slow and long rides in order to drop some weight, it has been working.  I will after this race pick up the intensity to try and recover some of the top end that I have lost over the last 2 months.  I hope everyone likes the track this weekend, I think it is awesome and everyone that I talk to thinks the same thing.

Mercury marine

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

In my opinion Mercury should stick to their decision to go to Oklahoma.  If the union is stupid enough not to take a pay cut and keep the jobs here they should lose them.  In my opinion if they can’t make the concessions necessary to keep the jobs they deserve whatever happens.  What got me was channel 26 interviewed some woman that said she was better off on unemployment than to take the pay cut to $13/hr.  I know that it would take some changes in lifestyle to accommodate the pay-cut but it would be better than losing the job.  With thinking like that that woman deserves what is coming to her.

What manufacturing jobs are there left around here?  Almost all of the jobs in that sector are being moved out of state or out of country.  Another question to be proposed is where does a high school educated person find another job that pays $13/hr or more?  I have been looking for a job and with my education it is hard to find a job that pays more than that around here.

They all had a comment about the longevity of work that they performed.  The company really doesn’t look at that like they used to.  My grandparent’s generation was more concerned with that way of thinking, think of the nuclear family.  On average people hold 5-15 jobs in their lifetime, that shows that a person doesn’t really stay at one position for very long.  If the person is starting work at 18 and retires at 65 that is 47 years of work, with the high of 15 jobs that is an average of only ~3 years and the low of 5 that is an average of ~9 years.

I may be wrong but that is my opinion.  Let me know what you think.

Another crack.

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

After riding at the camp yesterday I noticed a crack in the GF, Grand Failure as I say.  It has been squeaking for the last month and now I noticed the crack.   The Grand Failure has only lasted about a year, just like every other one that I have had.  I think it is time to start saving to get this bike.

I am now recommending that anyone looking to get a new mountain bike not get a Gary Fisher.  I know a lot of other people that have had this very same problem.  I know Bubba has went through a ton of frames that have cracked in the very same spot.  I know that the Superfly has had a lot more problems associated with the frame design.  You would think that the company would redesign the frame or something so they don’t fail constantly.

Pics to come later.

A year’s worth of photograph examples

Friday, August 21st, 2009

I am going through my last year’s worth of photos and have posted some of them here.  I am excited, I might have found someone that will actually hire me.  Other than that there is nothing new going on.

Car fixed!

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

After two days and some extraneous parts I finally have my VW fixed.  I had to replace the wheel bearing and a tie rod end that I broke.  The bearing was the toughest part to fix, without a press I had to take a hammer and punch to drive out and press in the press fit type bearing.  I also had to take the steering knuckle off of the car to change it, that is a different way than I have seen before.  Most of the times with other cars you can replace the bearing without having to take so much of the vehicle apart.

Other than that there hasn’t been much of anything going on recently.

New fantasy camera

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

After cruising the different photography websites I came across one that was talking about Leica’s new S2 camera.

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0908/09081601leicassystemspecs.asp

The problem with the camera is that it is $30,000 for the body and a single lens.  That is on par with a Hasselblad camera but this one is a typical DSLR camera sized.  One of these years I would love to step up to a medium format camera.  I will have some photos for my blog sooner or later.  I am sorting through the 35,000 frames that I have taken since I got my camera.

Finished reading

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

I just wanted to post that I have finished reading “Without Remorse,” by Tom Clancy.  It is an awesome book, now it is time to go and read the next in the series, “Patriot Games.”  From previous experiences the books are A LOT better than the movies that are based off of them.  Now it is time to go and shoot the Big and Rich concert that is being held at Stadium View.

It’s been a while

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

This last week has been interesting.  I have now found someplace to get some money from, thanks for the reference Matt.  Riding has been getting more and more frequent.  I am trying to ride 2 times a day for a total of ~4 hours.  I also have been losing weight like a mad man, which is a great thing.  I hope to be ready for the last couple of WORS races this year.  I am pretty sure I am going to do the race the lake.  I don’t know if I will die while on the 93 mile course or not since the longest I have ever done was 80 miles.

Good luck to all who are racing this weekend.
